Quran: Muslim Companion
Privacy Policy
Last updated November 5, 2026
This policy explains what the Android app Quran: Muslim Companion and its Wear OS companion (together, "the app") do with your information, and what this website, muslimcompanion.net, does. The app is published by Oryx Digital LLC ("Oryx Digital", "we", "us").
The short version
- The app has no accounts and we run no server for it. We do not receive, store or sell your personal information.
- What you save in the app (bookmarks, notes, progress, settings) stays on your device.
- Your location is used on your device to work out prayer times and the Qibla. It leaves the device only as described below, mainly when you look for nearby mosques or restaurants.
- The free version shows advertising from Google, which uses your device's advertising ID. The full version shows no ads.
What stays on your device
The app keeps the following on your device and does not send it to us or to anyone else: your settings, bookmarks and notes, saved duas, reading, memorisation and course progress, quiz results, tasbih counts, the last location used for prayer times, the recitations you have downloaded, and whether you own the full version.
This information is removed when you clear the app's data or uninstall the app. If you have turned on Android's backup, your device may include the app's data in the backup kept in your Google account; that backup is governed by Google's terms, not by us.
Location
If you allow it, the app reads your device's location to calculate prayer times and the direction of the Qibla. The calculation happens on your device. You can refuse the permission and choose your city by hand instead.
Your location leaves the device in these cases only:
- Naming your place. To show the name of your town, the app asks your device's location service, which on most Android phones is provided by Google, to turn your position into a place name.
- Nearby mosques and halal restaurants. When you open these screens, the app sends your position to public OpenStreetMap search servers (the Overpass API, operated by third parties) to find places near you. As with any internet request, those servers also see your IP address. The answer is kept on your device for a week so that the request is not repeated.
- Your watch. If you use the Wear OS companion, the app sends today's prayer times and your place's coordinates to your own watch through Google's Wear OS connection, so the watch can show the times and the Qibla.
Other connections the app makes
Most of the app works without the internet. It connects to the following services when you use the features that need them. Each one receives your IP address and the request itself, as any internet server does, and nothing that identifies you by name.
- Recitation. When you play or download a recitation, the audio files are fetched from everyayah.com.
- Zakat calculator. Current gold, silver and currency rates are fetched from gold-api.com and open.er-api.com. The amounts you enter stay on your device.
Links you tap, such as a source's page, a place in your maps app, the live broadcast from the two Holy Mosques (which opens in YouTube) or the Play Store, open in other apps, which have their own policies.
Advertising in the free version
The free version shows banner advertising provided by Google AdMob. To show and measure ads and to prevent fraud, Google collects information from your device, including its advertising ID, IP address (from which a general location can be estimated), device and app details, and how you interact with the ads. Google explains this in How Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services.
- Where the law requires it, including in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, the app asks for your choice before any ad is requested. You can change that choice at any time under Settings, Ad privacy choices.
- You can reset or delete your advertising ID in your device's settings (Settings, Google, Ads on most phones).
- We ask Google to show only ads rated for a general audience.
- The full version shows no ads and requests none.
Purchases
The full version is bought through Google Play. Google handles the payment; we never see your card or account details. The app only asks Google Play whether your Google account owns the full version, and keeps the answer on your device. Refunds and payment questions are handled by Google Play under its own terms.
Notifications
Prayer alerts and reminders are scheduled on your device by the app itself. They do not come from a server, and we cannot send you messages.
This website
muslimcompanion.net is a set of static pages served through Cloudflare's network. It sets no cookies and runs no analytics, advertising or tracking scripts, and everything on it is served from muslimcompanion.net itself. Like any web server, Cloudflare receives the technical details your browser sends with each request (your IP address, the time, the page requested, the referring page, and your browser and device type) to deliver the pages and keep the site secure; Cloudflare describes its handling of this data in its own privacy policy.
If you write to us, we receive your email address and what you put in your message, and use them only to answer you. We keep the correspondence for as long as the conversation needs, and you can ask us to delete it at any time.
Who we share information with
We do not receive your personal information through the app, so we have none to sell or share. The services named above receive what is described directly from your device, under their own privacy policies. They may process it in countries other than the one you live in.
Children
The app is made for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Your choices and rights
- Refuse or withdraw the location permission in your device's settings, and choose your city by hand.
- Turn prayer alerts and reminders off in the app or in your device's settings.
- Change your advertising choices as described above, or buy the full version to remove ads.
- Delete everything the app has stored by clearing its data or uninstalling it.
Depending on where you live, the law may give you further rights over your personal information, such as access, correction and deletion, and the right to complain to your local data protection authority. Because we hold no personal information about you, requests about advertising data are best addressed to Google; if you write to us at contact@muslimcompanion.net, we will help where we can and answer within 30 days.
Security
The app's connections and this website use encryption (HTTPS), and what the app stores is kept in its private storage on your device, protected by Android. No system is perfectly secure.
Changes to this policy
If the app changes what it does with your information, we will update this page and the date under its title before the change reaches you.
